We are a club who cater for both men and women of all ages, including juniors from 7 upwards. No matter whether you are an experienced bowler or a complete novice, prefer bowling indoors/outdoors or both; Sully Sports Bowls Club welcomes everyone. Our aim is to enthusiastically promote this skilful, competitive and enjoyable game.

We are associated to the Welsh Bowling Association and the Welsh Indoor Bowling Association. The club competes in a wide range of national, county and local leagues and competitions, as well as individual club championships and friendly matches.

Sully Sports Bowls Club indoor and outdoor has a membership in excess of 1,000 and ranges from international players to complete novices who have just learnt that the bowling ball is not entirely round! New members are always welcome whether you just want to try bowling out and see if you like it, just moved to the area or want to start playing again.

  • Outdoor Bowls

Our outdoor bowls season starts in April and finishes in September. The club plays in the private green league and enjoys a full and wide-ranging programme of fixtures which also include cup competitions. We also play friendly matches in the early weeks of the season against local clubs in the Vale of Glamorgan area.

The club has a sociable and fun approach to bowling and throughout the season we regularly have friendly roll-ups and in-house club competitions. Monday evenings are a social affair where club members get the opportunity to play each other and practice for the upcoming competitions. We always ensure that all skill levels and abilities are catered for and encourage everyone to take part. People who are interested to have a go and consider a membership are welcome to join us on a Monday evening from 5:30pm.

The Club’s bowling green has a total of 6 rinks that is kept in good condition by volunteer groundsmen who are club members and specialist professional help is used at various times during the year in preparation for the new playing seasons. The members take great pride in maintaining the outdoor facility to a high standard.

The welcoming outdoor bowls clubhouse is situated in a lovely garden setting overlooking the bowling green with views over Sully Bay. The clubhouse has a relaxed atmosphere and has toilets and changing facilities. The kitchen area can also be used to prepare hot drinks and snacks.

We are closely linked with the Indoor Bowls arena which we use for refreshments following competition games.

  • Mens Football

Sully Sports Football Club was established in 1972 and has a long, proud and successful history. Since our foundation the football club has grown sustainably and is now affiliated to the South Wales Football Association.

The club's goal is to enter the Welsh League and with our current players, our excellent youth policy and the management structure that is in place, we feel our ambition can be achieved in the not too distant future.

Sully Sports FC’s first team is currently in the South Wales FA Senior League 1, which is a feeder to the Welsh Football League Division 3. The team won The FAW Trophy in 2012 formally known as the Welsh Amateur Cup and this year (2014) reached the last 32 of the Welsh Cup, a cup in which the winning team qualifies to play in the UEFA Europa League (may be one day).

The first mini, junior and youth sides were formed in the village in 1972 since then we have steadily grown and now Sully Sports FC currently have 20 teams training and playing football with us; the largest junior and mini football sections in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Sully Sports FC have 10 mini boys teams, 9 junior boys teams and 2 girls teams an under 10 and an under 12 both in the South Wales Girls League.

Our various junior football teams have thrived over the last few years. The commitment, passion and hard work of local volunteers, coaches, managers plus a smashing group of parents, has played a major factor in this success.

We are always looking for new players to join our excellent football club. Therefore if your son or daughter is interested in “the beautiful game” and wants to develop new skills, make new friends and just have a really great time, please get in touch.

  • Mens Rugby

Sully Sports Men's Rugby Football Club

In 1966 a group of employees of the Distillers Co. Ltd Including a number of Barry R.F.C members, formed a 'social' rugby XV to play games at the company's sports and social ground at Sully. On 7th October 1966 the newly formed Distillers (Plastics) RFC played its first match against Glamorgan XV winning 17-5, they competed in 6 games in their first season.

The founder members who start up the side were Jim Edwards, Bernie Somers, and Mike Ingram along with other members/players including Sid Prosser, Robin Fenton, Graham Cummins and Gary Hobbs. Together with administrators Bill Llewellyn and Dennis Prater, they formed a powerful club unit, particularly when joined by other experienced rugby players such as Phil Thomas, Alun Morgan and Brian Owen.

The following year the club enter the Cardiff and District Rugby Union and changed their name to BP (Barry Plastics) RFC. They aroused considerable interest in the local rugby world; so much so that The Welsh Rugby Sports Magazine ran a full length feature in their March 1967 edition (click/tap here or on the program image below to download full article).

The club regularly competed in the Welsh Brewers Cup, the Mallett Cup, Ninian Stuart Cup and the Ron Lucock Cup. Reaching the semi-finals of the Welsh Brewers Cup, Mallet Cup and the Ninian Stuart Cup on several occasions over the years, in 2011 the club won the celebrated Ron Lucock Cup.

For more than 20 years BP sponsored and the club hosted the very successful and prestigious South Wales Industrial Sevens Tournament. Which was the longest running tournament of its kind in Wales and the club enjoyed a lot of success competing in it.

The club have toured extensively since its formation, visiting countries which included Holland, Spain, Germany and Belgium, as well as many clubs within the U.K.

With the Welsh Rugby Union taking more control of rugby in Wales over the last decade, the 1st team came out of the Cardiff and District League to play in division 6 of the WRU. Further WRU reorganisation of the divisions have seen the club play in division 7, which the team won and then in the following season went on to be runners up in division 6.

The latest WRU reorganisation (2014/15 season) comprises of 24 new leagues, which sit beneath the existing Principality Premiership and SWALEC Championship. Sully Sports RFC first XV are placed in Division 3 East Central C League. Our second XV are currently in Division 2 of the Cardiff and District Rugby Union League.

Sully Sports RFC’s first team’s club captain is John Blake and the 2nd team’s captain is John Moyle, with Gareth Ivory as head coach. With the guidance and experience of all the aforementioned, both teams are confident of promotion at the end of this season.

The backbone of the club since its foundation has been provided by the hard work of its committee, and in particular to several long serving chairmen, who have included Bill Edwards, Alan Jones, Michael Stafford and Ray Gallivan. Our current rugby chairman is Steve Pugh..

The spirit of the club is illustrated by the number of family groups that have played - seventeen father/sons combinations, countless brothers, cousins, uncles and even one grandson, playing together in the same team as their siblings.

Sully Sports RFC celebrates its 50th anniversary this year (2014), and once again it has becoming a side that plays hard but good rugby. The club is renowned for its great spirit, comradery, loyalty and friendliness. We will always offer a warm welcome to anyone who wishes to join us no matter what their ability, as long as they share our love of rugby and socialising.
